The Meghalaya government wants to restart negotiations to resolve the disputed border with Assam with a clean slate but has ordered the autonomous district councils to gather all land documents together in order to strengthen the state’s case against the larger neighbour.
District Council Affairs and Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that the councils are desirous of meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah when the latter visits Shillong on July 14-15 in order to discuss the vexing issue of the border.
The District Council Affairs Department wants the ADCs to submit documentary proof of Meghalaya’s claim of areas along the border, so that its case is strong.
Rymbui also said that the border issue with Assam should be tackled with a two-pronged strategy – resolving the claims over the 12 areas of difference and policing these areas by setting up infrastructure, like border outposts.
