The Meghalaya government has shot off a letter to Assam, terming the construction of the Assam border police outpost at Saba village illegal and a violation of the status quo between the two states.
Spokesperson of the Hynniewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum, Thomas Passah, said that this was informed by the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills, Garod LSN Dykes, who invited pressure groups to a meeting held today on this matter.
“We were informed by the DC that the Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, MS Rao, in the letter sent to the Assam government has termed the construction of the police outpost as illegal and a violation of the status quo,” Passah said.
Informing that the DC informed that a meeting between the two parties on the matter will also be convened at the earliest, Passah said that the DC has also assured them that he and the district Superintendent of Police will also carry the same message to a meeting to be held soon with the DC of Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district.
“We have made ourselves clear that this police outpost at Saba should not be made operational and if the Assam government proceeds with this illegal construction by force, we have demanded that the Meghalaya government should also erect a police outpost there so that our people are protected,” he added.
