South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai today donated financial assistance to 14 area committees tackling Covid-19 in his constituency amounting to Rs 5 lakh.
Shullai’s absence from the public sphere as the second wave of the pandemic surged through the state was noted upon by many, including his fellow politicians. Today he explained that he had been receiving treatment in Bethany Hospital for three weeks for an illness.
“I appeal to the concerned stakeholders and leaders of the Covid-19 committees to ensure that the financial assistance goes to the most deserving families that have nothing left to fend for themselves in this pandemic,” Shullai said today.
He said that financial assistance will also be provided to organizations and individuals who are helping in providing essentials and Covid relief materials in their respective localities including financial assistance to frontline workers and service providers, municipal and cantonment field staff, mortuary, and ambulance ferrying team among others as a support for their selfless services.
He lamented that the Rs 5,000 assistance announced by the government to the Dorbar Shnongs has not seen the light of the day and most of the local institutions’ funds have been exhausted owing to the various needs put in the combat against the pandemic.
Shullai also criticised the recent government order that stated that only those stores and businesses whose staff are vaccinated by June 24 will be allowed to reopen. He said that such a measure should only have been decided after consulting MLAs and other stakeholders.
“If there are no more vaccines and the vaccines will take time to arrive in the state, what will happen to the shopkeepers?” he asked.
Overall, Covid-19 numbers have come down in Laban of late, according to the reports from the medical officers in charge.
