      Covid-19 death toll in Meghalaya hits 250

      4100-plus new cases this month; record number of recoveries reported

      The death toll from Covid-19 in Meghalaya hit 250 today, with a further eight new fatalities linked to the disease reported in the state. There were also 400-plus new cases for the fourth day running, as well as a single-day record of 314 recoveries.

      Seven fatalities were added to East Khasi Hills’ figures, with the other one from Ri-Bhoi. Seven out of the eight had Covid-19 pneumonia listed as a cause of death.

      The deceased were identified as Elizabeth Lynthong (78) of Amjalong, Mira Dkhar (72) of Jaiaw Langsning in Shillong, Nissida Lyngdoh (65) of Khliehshnong in Sohra, Bijay Raj (65) of Upper Mawprem in Shillong, Prilian Thabah (73) of Mawlai Umjapung, Westone K Sangma (66) of Golf Links in Shillong, Shidamon Kharjahrin (65) of Umlangkur and Rilianda Umdor (38) of Mawlai Phudmuri.

      The 408 new infections reported today took the overall number for May to 4,139, a record for any month.

      East Khasi Hills accounted for 226 of today’s reported infections – 30 among returnees, five armed forces/paramilitaries, six police personnel, 60 high-risk contacts, 56 influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), two through screening, five health workers, five severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), one in Golf Links, one in Laban, one in Laitkor, three in Laitumkhrah, two in Lapalang, four in Madanrting, one in Mawbah, one in Mawdiangdiang, two in Mawlai, six in Mawlynrei, one in Mawpat, one in Mawprem, five in Nongkseh, eight in Nongmynsong, one in Nongrah, five in Nongthymmai, one in Khyndailad, one in Pynursla, four in Rynjah, two in Shella, one in Smit, two in Umpling and two in Upper Shillong.

      West Garo Hills reported 48 new cases (15 screening, 13 armed forces/paramilitaries, seven high-risk, seven police, three health workers, three ILIs), West Khasi Hills 38 (19 high-risk, seven screening, six in Mallangkona, five returnees, one health worker), East Jaintia Hills 24 (12 ILIs, 11 high-risk, one returnee), South West Garo Hills 19 (eight ILIs, six in Betasing, five screening), Ri-Bhoi 16 (10 ILIs, three high-risk, one health worker, one SARI, one screening), West Jaintia Hills 13 (nine ILIs, three screening, one returnee), South Garo Hills 11 (six high-risk, two screening, two ILIs, one health worker), East Garo Hills six (three screening, two high-risk, one health worker) and North Garo Hills five (three high-risk, one armed forces/paramilitaries, one returnee).

      There were also 314 recoveries – 158 in East Khasi Hills, 47 in West Khasi Hills, 37 in West Garo Hills, 31 in Ri-Bhoi, 20 in West Jaintia Hills, eight in East Jaintia Hills, five in South West Garo Hills, four in South West Khasi Hills, two in South Garo Hills, one in North Garo Hills and one in East Garo Hills.

      There are now 3,381 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 1,968 active cases, Ri-Bhoi 442, West Garo Hills 291, East Jaintia Hills 160, West Khasi Hills 123, West Jaintia Hills 123 and South West Garo Hills 110.

      In all, Meghalaya has had 20,985 Covid-19 cases, of which 3,381 are active, 17,354 have recovered and 250 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 82.70 percent. The fatality rate has increased to 1.19 percent. More than 3.69 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the state as of today. The seven-day rolling average for new cases now stands at 386.29.
