The Khasi Students Union (KSU) paid a visit to the Umling checkpoint in Ri-Bhoi today to try and ascertain the facts behind the social media frenzy of the last few days that was brought about by claims that entrants to the state could buy fake Covid-negative reports.
Yesterday the Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah, described the accusation as fake news and demanded that those who have spread it prove it in public. Her comment contradicted the statement reported in certain sections of the press by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who had reportedly said that the state government had been aware that fake negative test results were being sold to entrants to Meghalaya at the Umling facility.
KSU regional president Ferdynald Kharkamni met with the centre’s managers, a magistrate and Deputy Superintendent of Police at the checkpoint.
He lauded the efforts of the officials who are working night and day to make sure that the people entering the state complete all mandatory procedures to contain the spread of the virus.
Kharkamni also requested the state government to seal all other vulnerable entry points into the state along the porous Meghalaya borders.
