Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today that he has ordered an independent inquiry into alleged corruption in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL), going back 10 years.
There have been claims and counter-claims from various parties within the state-owned utility and Power Department as a war has developed pitting the engineers against Conrad’s brother, Power Minister James Sangma, and Chairman & Managing Director Arunkumar Kembhavi.
The CM said that the three-member inquiry committee will be led by a retired judge, with the other two members comprising a retired civil servant and one with a technical background.
The inquiry’s terms of reference will include “different tenders issued by the MeECL, including state and central schemes; different manpower issues, including appointments and other irregularities in human resources; allegations of power theft,” and others, Conrad said.
The committee will be given between four and six months to go back over the 10 years since the MeECL was debundled.
“The exact terms will be worked out by the Political Department but the committee should be constituted at the earliest and the process has begun. Hopefully within a few days the committee will be formed,” the Chief Minister concluded.
