Employees of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) have requested Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to constitute an independent inquiry into alleged irregularities and scams in the state-owned power utility.
In a letter today, the Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL (Employees) Associations and Unions (CCORMAU) said that with accusations and counter-accusations hitting the headlines almost every day, an independent inquiry is the need of the hour to probe the various allegations, which include power theft by industries in Byrnihat, waiver of penalties, smart meters, one time settlement scheme and other issues.
CCORMAU was willing to concede that the inquiry should also look into the allegations of wrongdoing that have been leveled against its leaders.
Two weeks ago, CCORMAU’s then president, Pradeep Kumar Chullet, resigned “for the dignity of CCORMAU” while strenuously denying anonymous charges of corruption made against him in a local newspaper.
“If there is no action on the above within 60 days, then CCORMAU shall reinstate the president and further course of action shall be decided,” the letter to the CM, which was signed by the committee’s interim president P Marwein and general secretary BK Nongkhlaw, said.
CCORMAU also insisted that anyone found guilty should receive exemplary punishment and hoped that such an inquiry would lead to reform and a revamp of the MeECL, which is struggling financially, perhaps, because of all the alleged scams.
