Two women became the latest Covid-related fatalities recorded in Meghalaya today.
Purnima Lama (45), of Nongmynsong in Shillong, was admitted to Bethany Hospital on April 23 and passed away early today morning. Cause of death was acute respiratory distress syndrome, Covid-19 pneumonia with Type 2 diabetes.
Saira Tynsong (54), of Darrang in West Jaintia Hills, was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital on April 18 and also passed away today morning. Cause of death was Covid-19 infection with Type 1 respiratory failure.
Meanwhile, another 208 cases of Covid-19 were recorded in Meghalaya today, a new record for 2021, with 118 of these being among returnees.
East Khasi Hills accounted for 161 of the new cases – 100 among returnees, 6 armed forces/paramilitaries, 16 high-risk contacts, two health workers, five influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), one severe acute respiratory infection (SARI), eight through screening, one in Happy Valley, two in Laban, one in Lapalang, one in Madanrting, seven in Mawlai, seven in Nongmynsong, three in Khyndailad and one in Rynjah.
East Jaintia Hills reported 14 cases (five high-risk, four returnees, three ILIs and two in a factory cluster), Ri-Bhoi 13 (eight returnees, two armed forces/paramilitaries, two ILIs, one high-risk), West Jaintia Hills nine (three returnees, three ILIs, two high-risk, one through screening), East Garo Hills four (three high-risk, one returnee), West Garo Hills four (two armed forces/paramilitaries, one returnee, one high-risk) and South West Khasi Hills three (two high-risk, one returnee).
There were also 62 recoveries – 46 in East Khasi Hills, six in Ri-Bhoi, five in East Jaintia Hills, two in South West Khasi Hills, two in West Jaintia Hills and one in West Garo Hills.
There are now 1,388 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 1,008 active cases, Ri-Bhoi 131 and West Jaintia Hills 122.
In all, Meghalaya has had 15,994 Covid-19 cases, of which 1,388 are active, 14,446 have recovered and 160 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 90.32 percent. The fatality rate is 1.00 percent.
