The 153rd Covid-related fatality in Meghalaya was recorded today in East Khasi Hills, the Health Department informed.
Mebilda Bareh (74), of Mawlai Nongkwar, was diagnosed with Covid-19 on April 7 after being admitted to Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital in Shillong.
She passed away due to Covid-19 pneumonia with acute respiratory distress.
Meanwhile, a judge in the District Council Court, Shillong, has tested positive for Covid-19 and those who came into contact with him in the last few days have been told to come forward for contact tracing, it was informed today.
The judge in question is Dr. Stral Kharsyiemlieh and the general public, especially lawyers and litigants who came into contact either with the judge or his magisterial staff, have been requested to come forward for providing their names, age, address and contact number to the Registrar of the court to enable the health authorities to carry out contact tracing.
It was also advised to the persons concerned that they self-isolate for a period of five days and to follow protocols prescribed by the Health Department.
The District Council Court will remain closed tomorrow for sanitisation of the premises.
Meanwhile, Covid cases in the State increased by a further 73 today, 23 of which were among returnees.
East Khasi Hills accounted for 36 of these cases – 15 returnees, 18 high-risk contacts, two armed forces/paramilitaries and one frontline worker. West Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi reported 12 cases each. In each district there was one returnee and 11 high-risk contacts who tested positive.
There were also five cases in West Garo Hills (four high-risk, one returnee), three in West Khasi Hills (two high-risk, one returnee), two each in South West Khasi Hills (both returnees) and East Jaintia Hills (both returnees) and one in East Garo Hills (high-risk).
There were also 41 recoveries, 40 in East Khasi Hills and one in Ri-Bhoi.
There are now 680 active Covid-19 cases in the state. East Khasi Hills alone accounts for 470 active cases and West Jaintia Hills 109.
In all, Meghalaya has had 14,871 Covid-19 cases, of which 680 are active, 14,038 have recovered and 153 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has fallen to 94.40 percent. The fatality rate is 1.03 percent. Over 1.72 lakh doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in Meghalaya as of today.
