With a written history going back more than 170 years, the Khasi language fully deserves to be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, Chairperson of the All India Poetess Conference (AIPC), Prof Streamlet Dkhar said today.
“We cannot just be content in the way we are now but we have to fight to get the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India because the Khasi script has been in existence for 178 years,” Dkhar said today while speaking as one of the resource persons during the launch of a book “Ki Umjer ba la Kynshew”, authored by CV Syiem.
Lauding all the authors and poets for their contribution to Khasi literature and poetry, she said, however, that authors and poets make very little in the way of income and almost none can make a livelihood out of their passion for writing.
Stating that financial assistance from the Education Department and Arts and Culture Department to Khasi authors is also inadequate, she urged the public to show their love for their own language by encouraging and supporting Khasi writers and authors by buying their books.
