The State government has decided to release one fourth of the remaining 30 per cent arrears to all its employees and pensioners.
The office memorandum on this matter was issued by the Finance Department today.
However, the amount of arrears to be released is just 7.5 per cent of the remaining 30 per cent arrears of the revised pay and allowances of State government employees and pensioners accruing for the period from January 1, 2017 to November 30, 2017.
It may be noted that State government employees have questioned the delay to clear their pending 30 per cent arrears. While 30 per cent and another 40 per cent of the revised arrears were released in 2017 and 2018, the remaining 30 per cent which was due to be released in 2019 has been kept pending.
The Meghalaya government during the tenure of Dr. Mukul Sangma as Chief Minister has in November 2017 revised the pay scales for its employees, including school and college teachers, besides over 29,000 pensioners as recommended by the Fifth Meghalaya Pay Commission.
The government employees started drawing revised salary from December 2017, although the pay revision is with effect from January 1, 2017.
However, when the Conrad Sangma government came to power in 2018 it was unable to fully clear the arrears to both employees and pensioners due to paucity of funds.
The State government spends over Rs 450 crore every month for the salary and pension of its employees.
