Open dumping of assessed coal and uncovered dumping of coal at cement factories and their captive power plants are prohibited in East Jaiñtia Hills district to prevent acid mines drainage in the depots/storage facilities.
The District Magistrate in an order passed under Section 144 CrPC today informed that this was done as per the orders of the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal. He also stated that there is an apprehension that transportation and dumping of coal might continue if not prevented and further environmental nuisances will be created by such irresponsible actions along the NH 6.
Therefore, in order to streamline and to enforce transportation of coal with proper insulation by water proof tarpaulin during transit to prevent environmental degradation, the District, Magistrate through the order said that dumps should be covered by permanent sheds/ water proof tarpaulin, garland drainage should be constructed along with the acid drain storage tanks and treatment of acid mine drains collected in storage tanks should be done.
The order also states that any unauthorised coal dump will be seized and confiscated immediately. If anyone is detected or found violating the above stipulated conditions, stern action will be initiated against them as per provisions of the law, the order said, adding, that it will also include coal miners, coal owners, labourers, truck owners and drivers.
