Jowai, Sep 22: The War Jaintia Students’ Union (WJSU) today apprehended 11 Bangladeshi nationals who had allegedly entered India illegally through the Dawki border and handed them over to Amlarem Police Station along with one dalal (broker).
According to the WJSU, the illegal immigrants were apprehended from the at Amlarem-Dawki Road (Lad Amtapoh area) without any valid passport, visa or travel document.
The group comprises four adult males, a male infant aged about 4 months and six females.
WJSU Senior Vice President Autumn Sumer said the Bangladeshi nationals admitted to have entered India illegally through Dawki and were being ferried in a vehicle. On learning that checking was underway ahead, the driver fled with the vehicle, after which the group proceeded on foot and were found walking on the roadside.
The union also apprehended one dalal from Jowai who was allegedly arranging their transit, and handed him over to the police.
The WJSU has urged police to take all 12 into custody, verify identity and mode of entry, register a case under Foreigners Act, 1946 and Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920, probe the broker network and trace the absconding driver and vehicle.
WJSU has termed the illegal entry of Bangladeshis a serious threat to security and demography of War Jaintia border areas and said it will extend full cooperation in the investigation.
