In order to mark 100 years of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), the Sir Syed Foundation North East India, in collaboration with the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) and ERD Foundation Guwahati, organised an AMU centenary celebration at the USTM campus today.
The event, whose theme was ‘Revisiting Sir Syed’s Vision and Taking the Legacy Forward’, was graced by eminent dignitaries including several from AMU.
USTM Chancellor, Mahbubul Hoque, who is also an alumnus of AMU, said in his welcome address, “It is our responsibility to carry forward the legacy of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Sir Syed’s role in developing modern education in modern society can never be forgotten.”
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. M M Sufyan Beg, who was present as the guest of honour at the event. He remembered Sir Syed by speaking about the importance of modern education and mentioned, “A society can never progress without the acquisition of western education and science. It should be the basic duty of every AMU alumnus to strive for eliminating ignorance, superstitions and evil customs prevalent in society by achieving excellence in the field of modern education and science.”
The inaugural address was given by the AMU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor, and was followed by a speech by the USTM Vice Chancellor, Prof. G D Sharma.
