Meghalaya recorded another two Covid-19 deaths, the Health Department informed today, both of whom were female patients of NEIGRIHMS in Shillong.
Namita Deka (31), of Police Reserve, was a cancer patient and was admitted to the hospital on January 6 with malignant cachexia (a wasting syndrome) and abdominal pain and disorientation. She suffered a cardiac arrest and died at the hospital that same evening. A Covid-19 test performed on her came back positive.
Rina Dutta (55), of Tripura, came to NEIGRIHMS on January 6 as well. She also tested positive and suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be revived. The immediate cause of death was given by the hospital as severe aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aorta) with severe pulmonar hypertension, cardio respiratory arrest and cardioembolic stroke with seizure.
The total number of Covid fatalities in East Khasi Hills is now 117. The district’s fatality rate is 1.39 percent.
There were also 24 new cases and five recoveries reported today.
Of the new cases today, East Khasi Hills accounted for 21 while East Jaintia Hills, North Garo Hills and South Garo Hills accounted for one each.
In East Khasi Hills five new infections were in Mawprem, two in Madanrting and one each in Bishnupur, Jhalupara and Nongrah.
The recoveries were reported from East Khasi Hills (four) and West Garo Hills (one).
In all, Meghalaya has had 13,560 Covid-19 cases, of which 155 are active, 13,262 have recovered and 143 have died from the virus. The recovery rate has declined to 97.80 percent while the fatality rate has increased to 1.05 percent.
The Health Department also informed that around 1,500 Covid tests were carried out in the state in the last 24 hours.
