Members of the Mawmluh Cherra Cements Employees Union (MCCEU) have called off their indefinite hunger strike today evening after receiving assurances on their long-pending salaries from the government.
Speaking to reporters, the union representatives said that the government has assured them that it will release funds to cover part of their salaries, which have been pending for 16 months, this month.
How much the employees of the state-owned company will receive was not known to them, however, as it will depend on the availability of funds in the Finance Department.
MCCL Chairman Wailadmiki Shylla told the union that it will meet the workers again next month to discuss the situation at the ailing company.
Though the hunger strike is off, the workers will first hold a meeting in Sohra before deciding to resume work.
The MCCL employees have 16 months of pending salaries due to them, which would amount to Rs 20 crore for around 1,500 workers, including casual staff. The pending salaries are for five months from November 2015 to March 2016, and then from February 2020 to December.
