Two more fatalities from Covid-19 were recorded in Meghalaya, one each in East Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills, on a day where the total number of cases the state has seen since April crossing 12,000.
Mingran D Sangma (50), of Salmanpara, South West Garo Hills, was admitted to Tura Civil Hospital on November 13 and tested positive for the coronavirus on November 23. He died yesterday evening of upper gastrointestinal bleeding with liver mass, oesophageal varices and Covid-19.
Belnarine Laloo (58), of Jowai, West Jaiñtia Hills, was admitted to Super Care Hospital in Shillong yesterday, tested positive for Covid-19 and died that same evening. Cause of death was Covid pneumonia.
The total number of fatalities linked to the disease now stands at 116, with 96 in East Khasi Hills alone and 12 in West Garo Hills.
East Khasi Hills’ fatality rate is now up to 1.33 percent, West Garo Hills’ is now 0.73 percent and the statewide fatality rate is 0.97 percent.
Meanwhile, there were 52 new cases of Covid-19 reported in Meghalaya, along with 87 recoveries today.
Of the new cases 32 were in East Khasi Hills, 12 in West Garo Hills, four in Ri-Bhoi, three in West Jaiñtia Hills and one in West Khasi Hills.
In East Khasi Hills one was a health worker, three were from the Laitumkhrah cluster and two from Madanrting. There was also one health worker in West Jaiñtia Hills who tested positive for the disease along with two returnees in West Garo Hills.
Of the recoveries 51 were reported in East Khasi Hills, 20 in South Garo Hills (all from the Siju cluster), six in West Garo Hills, four in South West Garo Hills, three in West Jaiñtia Hills, two in Ri-Bhoi and one in East Garo Hills.
In all, Meghalaya has had 12,005 Covid-19 cases, of which 648 are active, 11,241 have recovered and 116 have died from the virus. The recovery rate is 93.64 percent.
The Health Department also informed that around 2,500 Covid-19 tests were carried out in the past 24 hours.
