Shillong, Jul 16: Just a week following a tense exchange between the ICAR director and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) regarding holiday requests for the Behdeinkhlam festival, both parties came together to celebrate the foundation day of the institute and the death anniversary of the revered Khasi freedom fighter, U Tirot Sing Syiem.
The celebration, themed ‘Youth and Skill Development’, was held at the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam on Thursday.
During the event, KSU President Raymond Kharjana spoke about U Tirot Sing Syiem, his sacrifices and contributions to the Khasi community. He spoke about safeguarding identity while striving for a sustainable future, reinforcing the idea that U Tirot Sing Syiem’s quest for dignity and freedom continues to inspire the youth today.
Jaintia Students’ Union Education Secretary P. Suliang praised ICAR’s initiatives in fostering skill development to enhance employment prospects for Meghalaya’s young populace.
President of the Ri Bhoi Youth Federation, Bipul Thangkhiew, expressed gratitude towards ICAR for its endeavours, urging the exploration of entrepreneurship in sectors like fisheries and piggery, ultimately aiming to create more opportunities for rural youth.
Kadirvel in his keynote lecture emphasised the crucial role of youth in the development of the region. He pointed out that agriculture and allied sectors—such as farming, animal husbandry, and horticulture—hold significant promise for sustainable livelihoods and entrepreneurship. He highlighted the need for appropriate skill training, assuring that ICAR remains dedicated to providing necessary resources for youth empowerment.
