Shillong, Sep 1: Meghalaya’s Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari today informed that the hearing process of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has been extended by 14 days due to last month’s unrest brought about by the violent Khasi Students’ Union rally and will now end on September 18.
So far 1,29,298 SIR hearings have been held, representing just under one-fifth (19.84 percent) of the notices generated.
“So far, 297 electors have been found ineligible following the prescribed process of verification and hearing,” Tiwari said.
According to data presented, 6,51,735 notices have been generated under the claims and objections, notice and hearing phase, of which 5,71,989 have been delivered.
Districts have been directed to expedite delivery of the remaining notices and ensure electors get sufficient opportunity to attend hearings and submit supporting documents.
The CEO stressed that no name in the draft roll will be deleted without due process. Each case must be examined individually and a speaking order passed after proper inquiry and hearing.
The meeting also noted the resumption of the revision exercise in East Khasi Hills from August 31, following a disruption caused by the law and order situation in Shillong last month. In view of this, the SIR schedule has been extended by 14 days to ensure adequate participation.
The last date for filing claims and objections is now September 18. Disposal of claims, objections and hearings will be completed by October 17, and the final electoral roll will be published on October 21.
The extension is intended to give electors, particularly those affected in Shillong, more time to file forms, respond to notices and attend hearings.
