Shillong, Jul 15: An Assam-based Hindu right-wing organisation, Kutumba Surakshya Parishad (KSP), on Wednesday condemned the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for its reported demand for demolition of a “common worship hall” inside the CBI Office in Mawdiangdiang here.
The KSU, Shillong Mihngi Circle on Tuesday locked an under-construction temple, located inside the premises of the CBI office, arguing that the land, designated as government revenue land, should not be repurposed for unauthorised religious structures.
The union gave the CBI authorities one week to demolish the temple.
KSP president Satya Ranjan Borah termed the demand “anti-social, anti-constitutional and anti-national,” adding that such actions could trigger communal unrest. He said the call sets a “wrong precedent” and goes against constitutional rights.
Recalling the 2018 Mawjymbuin Cave controversy in Mawsynram, Borah said the KSP acknowledged Meghalaya authorities of protecting the state’s secular ethos. However, he claimed the latest development has shaken trust in the state government’s commitment to the Constitution and to religious freedom.
“India is a secular country and every citizen has the basic right to worship as per his or her belief. We must not support activities that create social and communal tension,” Borah said.
The KSP urged Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to step in and ensure that people across the state are allowed equal freedom to practice religion without obstruction.
