Shillong, Jun 25: The Synjuk ki Rangbah Kur met with Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Thombor Shiwat to address the need for legal frameworks that support the preservation of the matrilineal system among the indigenous peoples of the state.
The delegation, led by president R. L. Kharpran and general secretary Raphael Warjri, expressed concerns regarding the legislative measures surrounding the matrilineal system of clan lineage as enshrine in the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
During the discussions, they highlighted the necessity of protecting tradition, which serves as the cornerstone of social and cultural identity for the Khasi and Jaintia communities. The delegates made it clear that legislation is essential to sustaining their unique lineage practices.
They further emphasised the necessity of establishing a legal and constitutional mechanism for the recognition of the Dorbar Kur (clan organisation) and empowering the Rangbah Kur (clan elders) to perform their customary roles and responsibilities in preserving indigenous traditions, customs, and lineage practices.
The delegation expressed confidence that a legislation would not only reinforce customary institutions but also ensure that future generations retain their rich matrilineal heritage.
