Shillong, Jun 22: A bigger Meghalaya House will be constructed in Vellore with double the capacity of the existing facility, which is in a run-down state.
General Administration Minister Sosthenes Sohtun inspected the Meghalaya House and said it will shift to a new guesthouse next month due to the dilapidated condition of the existing building.
Speaking after a review meeting, Sohtun said the current Meghalaya House is “very old” with about 30 rooms to accommodate patients from Meghalaya who come for treatment at the CMC Vellore hospital.
“We visited some of the patients. They are really happy with the accommodation here and the services from staff. The number of patients has increased every year and in 2025 we have crossed 212 patients including attendants,” he said.
Sohtun said that the state government’s provision of free transportation for patients to CMC Vellore has helped poorer patients save money.
On the existing building, Sohtun said that a Public Works Department (PWD) engineer’s report found the building to be in a “very bad” condition.
“As a government we have to take a decision. We have to hire a new guesthouse so that we can accommodate patients coming for treatment at CMC Vellore,” he said. “We are seeking the help of the Planning and Finance Departments to get approval for construction of the [new] building.”
The proposed new building will double the present capacity of 30 rooms.
