Editor,
I write to you as a deeply frustrated resident of Mairang, seeking to bring to light the deplorable state of electricity supply in our constituency — seemingly unnoticed by those in power.
Mairang town faces electricity disruptions on a daily basis, throughout the year. It is not uncommon for residents to endure power cuts lasting more than 12 hours at a stretch. The situation in the surrounding villages is even more dire.
Furthermore, a few schools and colleges have been compelled to rely on diesel generators to maintain any semblance of normalcy. This has placed an enormous and unsustainable financial burden on these institutions. The cost of diesel and generator maintenance is extremely high, and operating on limited budgets simply cannot afford to run generators for hours on end every single day. This additional expenditure is money that could otherwise be invested in improving educational infrastructure, purchasing books, or supporting students from economically weaker sections.
What makes this situation all the more infuriating is the fact that the elected Member of the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Metbah Lyngdoh, from our constituency is the very person who holds charge of the power portfolio. We are left to wonder whether our representative is even aware of the ground realities his own constituents face day after day.
This is not a new problem. The electricity situation in Mairang has been deteriorating for years. The power department appears to function without any sense of urgency or accountability.
We, the residents of Mairang, are not asking for luxury — we are asking for a basic amenity that we are entitled to. We pay our electricity bills and we cast our votes. The least we deserve is a reliable power supply and a response from the authorities responsible for it.
It is my hope that attention is brought to this matter and all the relevant MLAs and ministers address the recurring issue and put into action long term solutions.
