Shillong, May 20: East Khasi Hills police today informed that they apprehended three individuals on suspicion of extortion.
The trio were arrested for demanding Rs 25,000 from a city businessman. While the suspects were about to take possession of the money the police swooped in and arrested them.
According to police, the three, who are residents of Lumparing, Lumshatsngi and Mawlai Mawdatbaki, claimed to be members of the Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) pressure group. They were produced before the court today and sent to judicial custody.
Meanwhile, the central body of HANM has defended its non-involvement in the alleged actions of the apprehended individuals.
HANM Vice President Moon Dkhar stated that the organisation was unaware of any such activities taking place. He stated that any members engaging in actions that tarnish the reputation of HANM would face necessary internal measures.
Bawandonbok Nongsiej, another leader acknowledged that while large groups might have individuals who overstep, such behaviours are intolerable and should not reflect on the organisation’s integrity. He also challenged claims that extortion demands were made from multiple hotels in Khyndailad, claiming that only a single hotel was in the allegations.
