Shillong, May 6: The Khasi Students Union (KSU), South West Border Circle has officially written to the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) calling for urgent scientific testing of the Prang River to assess contamination levels, identify pollution sources, and pursue legal action against violators.
Expressing serious concerns over fish deaths and colour changes of the river, located in the East Jaintia Hills, the union highlighted the need for governmental intervention to restore the river’s ecosystem and ensure ongoing monitoring to prevent future pollution incidents..
The condition of the river was initially brought to light by the KSU last month, raising suspicions about potential waste dumping nearby.
In a petition today, the KSU said the river, long used by local communities is a crucial water source, is showing signs of severe contamination. While mass fish deaths have been reported intermittently for the past five years, the union said the problem has worsened this year with both recurring fish mortality and visible discolouration of water.
The student body fears toxic discharge or hazardous pollutants are entering the river, endangering aquatic life and threatening the health and livelihood of people dependent on it daily.
Citing Article 21 of the Constitution, the KSU said the continued damage violates the right to a clean and healthy environment. It also referred to the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, reminding authorities that discharging untreated industrial or mining waste into water bodies is illegal.
