Shillong, May 1:The Census of India 2027 commenced in Meghalaya on Friday with the state’s top constitutional and political figures stepping forward to complete their self-enumeration on the opening day.
Leading the drive, Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar officially launched the online registration portal at Lok Bhavan in Shillong. In a symbolic start to the statewide exercise, the Governor completed his self-enumeration under Phase 1, becoming the first individual in Meghalaya to register himself and his family on the portal.
He was assisted by officials from the Directorate of Census Operations, Meghalaya.
Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma became one of the first citizens to go through the process.
Speaking on the occasion, the Speaker emphasised the role of citizens in shaping governance through data.
“Self-enumeration represents a vital step toward creating a more accurate and inclusive database of the population,” Sangma said. “Self-enumeration empowers every citizen to participate directly in this national exercise, ensuring that citizen’s identity, household, and community are properly represented.”
He urged all residents of Meghalaya to actively engage in the process with sincerity and a sense of responsibility.
