Shillong, Apr 14: The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) today organised a public meeting at Umsning in Ri-Bhoi to seek support from the public for its demand to grant Khasi the status of an official language.
During the meeting, KAS central body leaders addressed the gathering, including Prof DR Lyngdoh Nonglait, and RP Kharshiing, the president and general secretary of KAS respectively. Also present were KAS members from the Nongpoh unit and Rocky Kylla, the chairman of the Umsning Town Dorbar.
The meeting also witnessed participation and support from leaders of various pressure groups along with students from different colleges in the Umsning area.
Speakers at the meeting strongly emphasised the need to preserve and promote the Khasi language, describing it as a vital part of the identity and cultural heritage of the Khasi community. They further stated that granting official language status would significantly strengthen its use in government functions, education and public life.
