Shillong, Apr 10: A 55-year-old man was arrested by the South West Khasi Hills police today, for the rape of a minor that took place 11 years ago.
The crime, which happened on October 13, 2014, involved a three-year-old child who was brutally sexually attacked, resulting in severe injuries that required medical attention in Shillong.
Initially, the investigation into this heinous act concluded with a final report due to a lack of clues regarding the identity of the assailant.
Superintendent of Police Banraplang Jyrwa said that there were no substantial leads at the time, which led to a stop in the case’s progress. The perpetrator remained unidentified for nearly a decade, leaving the victim and her family in a state of distress.
However, a breakthrough arose when the victim, now older and with the strong support of her mother and family, bravely came forward to identify her attacker.
This crucial piece of information prompted a re-investigation. Jyrwa stated that an appeal was made to the Court of Special Judge (POCSO) in Mawkyrwat, leading to the revival of the case.
Following the recording of statements from the victim and witnesses, the accused was apprehended today, the SP said.
