Shillong, Mar 6: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has demanded action against the Dalmia Cement company for indiscriminate dumping of waste at Umtyr-A village, along the national highway 6.
In a complaint to the East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, the Khliehriat circle of the FKJGP said a large quantity of mixed and unsegregated waste has been dumped openly in the area, causing serious environmental pollution and posing health risks to nearby residents.
The organisation said the waste has been lying in the area, near the road and close to the natural surroundings for several months.
“The waste has not been properly segregated into biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials, which clearly violates proper waste management practices,” circle president Michal Chyrmang said.
The FKJGP said the company should immediately clean and remove the dumped waste and the district administration to take strict action.
