Shillong, Nov 16: The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), North Eastern Regional Centre, Shillong, in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, College of Science & Commerce (CSC), Mawphlang, organised a special programme at the historic Mawphlang Sacred Grove to celebrate Janjatiya Gaurav Divas and honour the 150th birth anniversary of tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from the local community, with over 100 attendees, including village leaders, youth representatives, faculty members and students.
The programme was graced by CA Lyngdoh, the Lyngdoh of Hima Mawphlang. Other dignitaries present included the Rangbah Shnong of Mawphlang, J Kharkongor (Principal, CSC Mawphlang), Saipari Sailo (Scientist D, ZSI Shillong), faculty from the College of Science & Commerce, Mawphlang and representatives from the youth community.
In their speeches, the dignitaries highlighted the significance of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in celebrating India’s rich tribal heritage, acknowledging the wisdom of indigenous communities and honouring their contributions to nation-building. The importance of sacred groves as living heritage sites and repositories of biodiversity was also emphasised.
The programme included an interactive session with the community, focusing on the cultural and ecological relevance of Mawphlang Sacred Grove and the collective responsibility to preserve these ecological treasures for future generations.
