Shillong, Nov 6:  Road Safety Week in East Jaintia Hills district concluded today with attendees pledging to follow all traffic rules and be responsible drivers.

The week-long programme was organised by the office of the District Transport Officer (DTO) in collaboration with the District Administration, Police, Public Works Department (Roads) and the Health departments under the theme, “Sadak Suraksha, Jeevan Raksha”.

DTO VR Ryngkhlem emphasised the important role of drivers in society, highlighting that they exemplify discipline, respect and responsibility in their profession. He said 26,770 people lost their lives in road accidents in India this year and urged drivers to avoid speeding, overtaking in blind zones and to always exercise patience and caution while driving on the road.

Ryngkhlem also stressed on the importance of wearing seat belts while driving and shared responsibility among all road users by being vigilant and urged pedestrians to always be alert before crossing the road.

Motor Vehicle Inspector H. Suchiang pointed out that with the rapid increase in the number of vehicles, issues such as traffic congestion and accidents have become major concerns that require collective effort and responsibility from drivers, enforcement agencies and the public alike. He stressed that most accidents occur due to negligence and impatience and reminded drivers to be disciplined, patient and mindful.

He further highlighted the importance of proper vehicle registration and valid driving licenses, even as she cautioned students below 18 years of age not to engage in driving, stating that juvenile driving is punishable by law.

Suchiang also informed the gathering on the government’s hit-and-run compensation scheme which provides Rs 50,000 for serious injuries and Rs 2 lakh for fatalities and provision of the Good Samaritan Law that encourages people to assist accident victims without fear.

Sub- Inspector of the Khliehriat Traffic Branch, S. Shadap reiterated on the importance of obeying traffic signals and warned about the dangers of drinking and driving stating that even a single mistake on the road can lead to fatal consequences even as he further urged drivers to always give way to emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire brigades to ensure timely assistance during emergency.

Medical Officer, Urban Health & Wellness Centre (UHWC), Khliehriat, Dr Priyanka Shylla said keeping first aid kits is important for immediate medical response during accidents. She explained basic first aid procedures, including bleeding control, fracture support and correct way to carry injured persons even as she trained participants on performing Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) through live demonstration.
