Shillong, Sep 22: Fear has gripped the city after a woman was left with bleeding ears when a suspected drug user allegedly ripped off her gold earrings in broad daylight near Shillong Civil Hospital on Sunday.
A viral video shows the woman bloodied, as locals gather to nab the accused.
The victim, a resident of Umlyngka, said she was walking from Anjalee to Civil Hospital around 11:15 am on September 20 to deliver food to her ailing husband admitted there when a man who had followed her from Anjalee Petrol Pump attacked her near the NCC gate opposite the hospital.
“He appeared to be addicted to drugs,” the woman said, urging the police to act so others do not become victims.
Police said the man was detained around the time of the incident and medical examination indicated drug addiction requiring hospitalisation.
The earrings were recovered near the indoor stadium in Laban.
As he required treatment, police issued him a notice under Section 35(3) BNSS to appear when required, warning of arrest if he fails to comply. Investigation is underway.
