Jowai, Aug 21: Two people were killed, including a two-year-old toddler, and a woman was injured when a 16-wheeler truck toppled onto a van in Mukhla, West Jaintia Hills today.
Police said the incident happened at around 11: 30 am when the driver of the truck bearing registration number UP76T 1960 lost control and toppled over a Maruti Eeco van ML04E 0731.
The clinker-laden truck also hit a female pedestrian, Sooki Sari, of Ladmukhla, who was carrying her child, Hawasan Sari on her back, police said.
The mother and child were immediately rushed to Norman Tunnel Hospital, Jowai. While Sooki was admitted to the intensive care unit, doctors at the hospital declared Hawasan brought dead.
The driver of the van, Convince Susngi of Nangbah Village, who was trapped, was rescued after three hours from the mangled vehicle under the truck. Though he was rushed to the Jowai Civil Hospital he was declared dead.
The driver of the truck abandoned his vehicle and fled the scene after the accident.
