Shillong, Sep 24: In a major tech-driven crackdown, West Jaintia Hills police have recovered 47 lost and stolen mobile phones and returned them to their rightful owners.
Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa said they had received multiple complaints from residents over the past few months. Using advanced technological tools and tracking techniques, teams traced the devices to various locations – including places outside the district and outside the state.
All phones were handed over after proper verification.
An investigation is now on to find out how the phones changed hands and reached different locations. He said strict legal action will be taken against anyone found involved in buying or selling stolen devices.
Issuing an advisory, the district police cautioned the public not to buy second-hand phones from unknown or unauthorized sellers without verifying ownership, warning that such phones could be stolen property.
The drive to trace more missing phones is still on.
“Efforts are continuing to reunite more lost phones with their legitimate owners,” police said.
