In yet another tragic vehicle accident in the State, five female Trinamool Congress party workers died after a pick-up they were travelling overturned.
The incident took place at Bolmedang near Kharkutta at around 11 am today morning.
The victims along with 24 others were on their way to an election rally at Chenanggre stadium in Adokgre under Kharkutta constituency where former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma and Trinamool Congress candidate from Kharkutta, Cherak W. Momin were to address.
Reports said that the pickup hit the side of a hill and overturned.
Out of five, four of the deceased were identified as Merina Sangma, Sabina Marak, Kukila Momin and Tesa Sangma.
Around 20 persons, who were in the same vehicle, were injured. Reports said that some of them suffered serious injuries.
The injured were taken to the Kharkutta PHC while others who were in critical condition were rushed to Goalpara in Assam for medical treatment.
Trinamool Congress candidate from Kharkutta, Cherak W Momin also reached the spot to help the injured.
Assam’s Deputy Speaker, Dr. Numal Momin also visited the place of incident.
Meanwhile, a moment of silence was observed at the Trinamool Congress rally at Chenanggre stadium in Adokgre as a mark of respect and condolence to the dead party workers.
