Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Meghalaya detained three suspected smugglers, seized 13 tonnes of sugar and six cattle in two separate smuggling-busting operations yesterday.
Personnel of the 172nd Battalion of the BSF successfully intercepted a vehicle loaded with 13 tonnes of sugar and detained the Indian driver and co-driver near Kuliang in East Jaintia Hills.
The BSF had received specific information about the smuggling attempt, it informed through a press release today. The vehicle was coming from Kalain in Assam and heading towards Kuliang, which is on the border with Bangladesh.
Upon questioning, the two in the vehicle were unable to produce valid documents pertaining to the sugar consignment. The duo were identified as
Rahimuddin from Karimganj district and Tazimul Hussain from Cachar district, both in Assam.
In a separate operation, BSF troops deployed at Sonapur intercepted two light vehicles loaded with six cattle intended for smuggling into Bangladesh. However, the driver of one vehicle managed to escape from the spot, while the other was apprehended by BSF jawans.
The seized sugar, cattle and apprehended persons were handed over to police for further legal action.
