The 4th Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya rescued 70 cattle and detained two suspected cattle smugglers along the international border in West Jaintia Hills on Thursday.
A BSF mobile check post was stationed in the Amlarem area where it intercepted five trucks crammed with 70 cattle that were heading for the border with Bangladesh.
Signals to stop were ignored by the smugglers and the border force personnel were involved in a pursuit for 3km before catching up and halting the vehicles.
The drivers fled from the spot, taking advantage of the thick vegetation and rough terrain, but two helpers – both residents of Assam – were caught. The five trucks and one accompanying pickup were seized.
The seized cattle and suspects were handed over to Amlarem police for further action.
