With the objective of providing an opportunity to interact with Japanese delegates for future collaborations in agriculture and allied sectors for the development of Meghalaya, the 17th Indo-Japan Dialogue on Economic Development in India was held today at CAU-CPGSAS Umiam.
The dialogue was jointly organized by Central Agricultural University Imphal, Kobe University Japan, Indian Society of Agricultural Economics Mumbai India and Centres for International Projects Trust, New Delhi India and the Government of Meghalaya.
The event provided an opportunity to Indian academicians, policymakers, government officials and industry experts to interact with six Japanese delegates from five universities, which include Prof. Takahiro Sato, Vice-Director, RIEB, Kobe University, Prof. Atsushi Kato, Waseda University, Prof. Kazutoshi Tamari, Chukyo University, Prof. Asuka Yamamoto, Kyushu University, Dr. Ryohei Kasai, Gifu Women’s University and Prof. Mio Morimoto, Waseda University.
Sato presented on the revamp of the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor (AAGC) and Japanese-affiliated multifunctional companies (MNCs) in India, highlighting investment trends and bilateral economic policies. He shared insights on the evolving Indo-Japan economic relations.
Tamari focused on the JAICA project and delivered talk on Japan’s national interests in the development of the Northeast, emphasising infrastructure development and trade linkages while Kato discussed political practices in an Indian village, providing a comparative perspective on governance and policy implementation at the grassroots level.
Yamamoto, presented an analysis of inheritance rights reforms in India and their impact, based on an empirical study conducted in Punjab.
Further, Kasai and Morimoto co-presented on Indo-Japanese economic synergies : Government and Institutional Perspectives.
Focusing on Indo-Japan academia-industry collaboration, resource persons emphasized on opportunities of development of Meghalaya.
Gunanka D.B, representing Government of Meghalaya, emphasised on the JAICA project, with which he has been linked from the past few years. Discussing on the topics like carbon credit, soil conservation, etc. He proposed government-academia and industry collaboration in the forum.
Dr Kamal Vatta from PAU, Ludhiana presented on the impact of water conservation technologies and practices in Punjab agriculture, focusing on sustainable resource management. He also discussed carbon credit in today’s agriculture.
Talks on agriculture, horticulture and animal husbandry in Meghalaya, market intelligence and others were delivered during the programme.
CAU Vice Chancellor Dr Anupam Mishra highlighted the encouragement of academia industry partnerships for technological advancements and entrepreneurship in agriculture.
Besides officials from the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department, ICAR-RC, ICAR-ATARI, Zone- VII, faculties from different constituent colleges of CAU, Imphal viz. CPGSAS, Umiam, COA, Kyrdemkulai, COA, Imphal and CCS, Tura were also present during the meet.
