Shillong, May 14: In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the community, a young man was allegedly beaten to death by the headman of Pynter village, Fulllmoon Khongsdoh along with members of the Village Defence Party (VDP).
The deceased has been named Trophimos Khongmawloh.
The allegation came to light after an FIR was lodged at the Sadar police station on May 5, by the victim’s father, Netnobiweit Khongsdong.
According to Khongsdong, the delay in filing the police complaint was only after learning about the circumstances of his demise, which was triggered by a video showing his son being assaulted in the dorbar hall on April 7.
The footage sheds light on the brutality of the attack, raising suspicions about the initial claims made regarding Trophimos’s death. His lifeless body was brought back home on April 8, in a sack.
The father said during the last rites conducted on April 9, he was not permitted to give his son a final bath or even view him, as the coffin had been sealed by the headman.
The narrative initially suggested by the headman was that Trophimos died from ingesting glass, an explanation that Khongsdong vehemently disputes after witnessing the video.
