Shillong, May 14: Community leaders have voiced urgent concerns over the escalating issue of substance abuse in West Khasi Hills.
During a consultative meeting organised by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer in collaboration with Dream Mission held at the Bishop Hall, Tiehsaw, the community leaders highlighted the necessity for enhanced infrastructure, including detoxification centers, rehabilitation facilities, and counselling programs.
The meeting was aimed at gathering insights from various stakeholders on effective strategies to confront drug abuse, which has become a significant threat in the district and the state. Attendees discussed the role of community involvement in raising awareness and providing support for affected individuals.
Dream Mission Director Francis G Kharshiing assured that all recommendations will be presented to the government for further action.
He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to combat drug abuse, stressing that comprehensive measures are necessary to protect young people from its perilous effects.
Kharshiing advocated for an approach rooted in compassion, where empathy and community support are paramount for rehabilitating youths grappling with substance addiction.
The meeting concluded with a united call for the society to cooperate and actively participate in building a safer, drug-free environment for the youth of West Khasi Hills and beyond.
