After three years in which she was separated from her family in Karbi Anglong, Assam a woman who recovered from Chronic Schizophrenia, has been reunited with her loved ones today.
The reunion of Glorina Shadap and her family members is the second success of its kind for Sabahmuswang halfway home in West Jaintia Hills district.
Glorina (51) was found loitering around the Mawiong area in Shillong. Following police intervention she was referred to mental health hospital MIMHANS for treatment on March 7, 2021.
Diagnosed with Chronic Schizophrenia, Glorina at the time of examination at MIMHANS was conscious but uncooperative and hence detailed information about her family was unavailable. However, with treatment and medication, her condition improved and was able to utter only her name and place of stay.
Following her stay at MIMHANS, she was transferred to the halfway home on August 11, 2023 along with 11 other patients.
It was on August 15 and 17, 2023 during a counselling session that Glorina could name her village as Umswai, Amsohbra, which falls under Karbi Anglong district in Assam. She was also able to share her marital status, the name of her sons, elder sister and her brother in-law, John Teron.
Secretary HH Mohrmen of the Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment (SURE) that runs the halfway home, invited one Rolinson Teron who hails from Karbi to interact with Glorina. After the interaction, Teron contacted her family through his relative and was able to speak to her brother-in-law.
Today, Glorina was handed over to her son and her sister in the presence of District Social Welfare Officer R Passah the home’s project coordinator Niwanka Shylla and staff.
Her son, Nelson Khorar, said, “I am very happy to see my mother.”
Ilasiewdor Gashnga, a social worker at the halfway home said, “There is no happiness more joyful than seeing family members reunite after losing their loved ones for many years. It is even more delightful if the person, once lost and presumed dead, suffered from mental illness. Imagine the joy for the family discovering that their loved one, thought to be dead, is alive and they can reunite as a family.”
The first success of the halfway home was the reunion of Jiratan Bibi of Kowarpur in Kamapur District, Assam with her family last month.
