The West Jaintia Hills district administration has issued a flood alert for residents living along the Kopili River under Laskein C&RD Block.
This comes as the water in the Khandong dam in Umrango, Assam is flowing above the spillway crest level (719.33 m) due to heavy rainfall.
On May 22, NEEPCO opened seven gates of the dam as a precaution. The information was shared with the media today.
Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to stay alert.
“Though presently the spilled water over the crest is not high, as a precautionary measure inhabitants residing nearby the Kopili River at the downstream of the reservoir to remain careful while using the river water and to keep away their livestock from the river banks to avoid any untoward incidents from the spilled water of the reservoir,” NEEPCO said.
The Khandong reservoir—part of the Kopili Hydroelectric Project and several downstream areas are now nearing danger levels.
