The Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety in West Jaiñtia Hills has directed all meat sellers to strictly comply with specific hygiene and sanitary practices to be followed by all food business operators (FBOs) who are engaged in the manufacturing, processing, storing and selling of meat products.
The rules are found as part of the Food Safety and Standards Rules (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) 2011.
The Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 also specifies that licensing and registration of persons engaged in food businesses (tribal and non-tribal) are mandatory.
Spot fines will be levied by the designated officer or Assistant Commissioner of Food Safety against petty business defaulters if they do not comply with the notice served to them. Further contravention will attract action as per the 2006 act.
