West Garo Hills police arrested eight fraudsters from different parts of the country for duping citizens.
The arrest was made when police were investigating into a fraud cases lodged at Tura police station after a staff of the DC office, Tura was duped Rs 5.50 lakh by fraudsters posing as the DC.
Following a complaint, a Special Investigation Team was formed under the supervision of Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh Rathore. The team travelled to Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Assam to nab the criminals behind the cyber heist.
All the eight arrested persons have been brought into the State and more arrests are expected as the investigation reveals more people being involved from different states, the SP said.
It may be mentioned that the State registered a number of cases were reported of impersonation through WhatsApp. Scammers would pretend to be Head of the Department/employee of various institutions and convinced people to share their credentials, OTPs. In order to gain the confidence of the victims, the fraudsters also put on DP (Display Picture) of the said HOD/employee.
