Heavy rain brought in by cyclone Remal has led to a significant rise in water levels of the Letein River in East Jaintia Hills district.
The District Disaster Management Authority has advised local residents not to go near the river.
Rain in Khliehriat, the district headquarter, has been recorded at 184.2 mm, as per the Indian Meteorological Department.
The district has also reported landslides along the Borghat-Sonapur road. Residents have been advised to remain alert and be cautious while travelling along the route.
Meanwhile, commuters and drivers have been asked to take necessary precautions and to obey traffic regulations while crossing through the bridges at Sutnga Sumer Road and Molamanoh.
The Deputy Commissioner said the bridges are made of old steel structure and are quite fragile. Overloading can pose an imminent danger to the general public.
