The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has filed an FIR after a fake news was circulated from a Facebook page, named ‘Na Lympung ki Khun Ka Ri’ that the party would join the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance after the Lok Sabha elections.
The FIR was filed by VPP Spokesperson, Batskhem Myrboh at the Sadar police station yesterday. As per the complaint, a screen shot of Northeast Live TV with a fake headline that reads, “VPP leaders seeking appointment with BJP top leadership. VPP likely to join NDA after 4 June” was shared on Facebook by a user ‘Dathrang Lyngh’.
Myrboh in the FIR also sought action on people who fraudulently spread a fake letter that has the signature of Songsak TMC MLA, Dr Mukul Sangma dated January 11, 2024 claiming that the VPP leaders have expressed their willingness to join BJP.
“The publication and posting of the aforesaid picture/images /statements in the public domain has cast aspersions and vilification upon the leaders and sitting MLA of the Voice of the People Party and such deliberate actions were made with the sole intent of defaming, maligning, insulting and spreading false, concocted and fabricated information to the public at large,” Myrboh said.
He said the circulation of the fake images has greatly damaged and cause irreparable injury to the reputation as well as the image of the VPP and its leaders and urged police to take book those responsible under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 and also under the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
