The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has issued strong condemnation over the “excesses” committed by the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, which apparently resulted in the death of truck driver Roning Nongkynrih on Friday night.
Nongkynrih was shot dead at Mawshun near Pomshutia in Pynursla while allegedly smuggling cattle to the Indo-Bangladesh border, though his family asserts that he was transporting buffaloes within the state legally. According to Nongkynrih’s brother, who was also the handyman in the truck, the BSF had signalled the truck to stop and they had complied. However, the border force opened fire regardless. The BSF story is that the truck failed to stop when signalled and the armed personnel fired blanks into the air.
The VPP demanded, through a press release today, that the family of the victim should be properly compensated while an inquiry by the National Human Rights Commission or Meghalaya State Human Rights Commission and the culprits should be punished.
Meanwhile, the KSU South Central Circle will hold a protest gathering tomorrow afternoon at Pynursla market in connection with the killing.
Family members of the victim have filed an FIR with Pynursla police against the killing. They also informed that the cattle were brought from Laitlyngkot.
Police said that a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Pynursla Police Station.
Meghalaya Frontier BSF Inspector General Pradip Kumar said that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
Kumar also said that the three BSF personnel involved in the incident have been withdrawn from the location and are on their way back to the frontier headquarters in Shillong.
