Shillong, Jun 26: The Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) organised a two-day vocational training program focusing on layer breed rearing for egg production.
The training, which concluded on Friday, was part of the District Nutrition Leadership Program (DNLP). It aims to equip members of selected Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Village Organizations (VOs) near selected Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) in South West Garo Hills district, with enhancing skills and knowledge about effective poultry management practices, which are vital for successful egg production.
The programme was held in convergence with the District Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department at the Vocational Training Centre, Ampati. Around 60 participants representing nearly 60 households took part in the training.
Resource persons conducted technical sessions covering the importance of poultry farming as a sustainable livelihood activity, selection and management of high-yielding layer breeds, feeding and nutritional management at different growth stages, vaccination schedules, disease prevention, biosecurity measures, hygiene and sanitation practices, waste management, and practical solutions to field-level challenges through an interactive question-and-answer session.
The initiative aims to strengthen sustainable livelihood opportunities while improving nutrition among children attending Anganwadi Centres by promoting the inclusion of eggs in the hot cooked meals served under nutrition programmes. By encouraging household-level egg production, the programme seeks to enhance both household income and child nutrition outcomes under the DNLP.
