Villagers of Pyndensohsham under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division today came out in huge numbers to repair a 2.496 km road constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, which according to them was low-quality work done.
The Umpung-Pyndensohsham road was constructed at Rs 278.886 lakh under the scheme and another Rs 32.951 for repair and maintenance. Two contractors, Turoilang Laloo and Jesse Suiam were tasked to maintain the road for five years by the Rural Development Department.
Villagers are upset over the shoddy job and repaired some patches by themselves.
Myntri of Pyndensohsham village, Moonking Iawphniaw said a meeting was held with the villagers to discuss about the condition of the road and decided to repair in whatever capacity they could.
He said some parts of the road has caved in about one feet and there are patches where water has seeped with poor drains being laid.
“We had highlighted the condition of the road to authorities concerned but all we are told was it will be done,” he added.
Secretary of the village, Farmingstar Snaitang added that landslide in certain areas along the road has affected people. He blamed the PWD and the contractors for not taking their work seriously.
Snaitang said during the construction, villagers had objected to the work as levelling of the road was poor and even spreading the road with a thin layer of black concrete.
“The villagers have parted their land for construction of the road, but with such low quality work, we will have to rethink our future course of action,” the secretary added.
