The District Magistrate, Eastern West Khasi Hills District has prohibited use of chemicals in the Kynshi river and its nearby streams in order to prevent further damage to all forms of aquatic lives.
The order under Section 144 CrPC was imposed following complaints that some individuals used poisonous chemical substance to catch fish from the river and its nearby streams during the night.
“Poisonous substances in streams contaminate the water and ultimately lead to the indiscriminate killing of all forms of aquatic lives,” the DM said, adding violators will be prosecuted under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code 1860.
